Recreation Management Strategy

For Release: May 26, 2000

The Bureau of Land Management is seeking comments from Californians on how to ensure environmentally responsible off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation on public lands. The BLM will use public comment to develop a national OHV management strategy.

"We would like the public's help to find ways to keep pace with the growing use of OHVs, while conserving our natural resources, " BLM Director Tom Fry said. "We don't have all the answers, and we're hoping folks will help us develop reasonable guidance and direction. We should focus our efforts towards on-the-ground solutions rather than tying up our scarce resources in litigation, protests, and appeals."

The goal of the national strategy is to provide a better framework for local BLM managers to address issues such as current OHV designations, executive orders, regulations, trends in management and management approaches, route inventory needs, resource issues, special management and sensitive areas and resources, monitoring, education, law enforcement and budget.

"BLM field offices in California have had extensive and positive working relationships with local OHV groups, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and others interested in OHV recreation management since the late 1960s," said BLM's Acting State Director, Al Wright. "The request of public comment for a national OHV management strategy builds on that history of experience here in California and we expect that our local OHV leaders and others will provide valuable comment."

BLM will gather public input on a national OHV management strategy at four public advisory council meetings to be held this summer in California.

The dates of the council meetings are:

Desert Advisory Council

June 9 and 10

Ridgecrest, CA

Northeast Resource Advisory Council

June 28 and 29

Alturas, CA

Northwest Resource Advisory Council

July 13 and 14

Arcata, CA

Central California Resource Advisory Council

August 11 and 12

Bishop, CA

Two open houses are scheduled to receive comments. One on May 31, at the Riverside BLM office 6221 Box Springs Blvd. and one at the Barstow Resource Area Field Office 2601 Barstow Road on Saturday, June 3, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Public comment can also be submitted in writing to:

Bureau of Land Management
California State Office
2800 Cottage Way
Sacramento, CA 95825
Attn: Off-Highway Vehicle Coordinator

Additional opportunity for submitting written comment is available via e-mail at mconley@ca.blm.gov
