SITUATION - Oppose applications to California OHMV Commission

April 4, 2000

The Honorable Gray Davis
Office of the Governor
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814

Dear Governor Davis:

I am writing to express my opinion that candidates John Brissenden and Howard Wilshire for the OHMVR Commission would not be in the best interest of OHV recreation in California.

From my review of publicly available information about these two candidates, they are anti-access extremists, not the moderate centrist appointee that has become the hallmark of your Administration.

These gentlemen have contributed to a publication, "In the Money and Out of Control", which has labeled the OHMVR Division of the Department of Parks and Recreation a "rogue agency". This document was provided to state legislatures and contains numerous factual errors.

The OHMVR Division of the Department of Parks and Recreation is a 30 year old program which allows millions of California families to enjoy outdoor recreation in a regulated setting and in a safe and environmentally sensitive manner.

Members of the OHV recreation community in California have donated countless manhours in maintaining the state OHV parks and public roadways through the Adopt a Trail and Adopt a Highway programs. For the past two years, the Octillio Wells OHV park has been the site of the Muscular Dystrophy "Off-Road For Hope" which has generated over $50,000 in contributions.

With the projected increase of population in California and the increase of recreational use of public parks and lands, the OHMVR Division of the Department of Parks and Recreation is a viable and important program. OHV recreation is family and community oriented and provides a positive impact on thousands of young people that counter the drug and violence of the inner cities.

A quality recreational opportunity for the public and quality of life opportunity for our state's families would be lost under the agenda supported by these candidates. Please reject these applications for membership on the OHMVR Commission.

Thank-you,
