During a July 8th meeting, members representing various Colorado 4x4 clubs and Forest Service representative discussed plans for various trail maintenance projects. The new Rangers assigned to helping with Holy Cross Trail were provided a tour by John Recob and Shelly Surface to provide them with specific information about plans. The Rangers agreed with the plans and gave the approval for club members to start implementing them
With five BHJC (Big Horn Jeep Club) members working with a rock drill, four winch points were constructed and moved tons of rock to protect riparian areas. Predator 4x4 provided winch point material and Rockhoppers provided the rock drill.
The specific work plans approved by the USFS are:
#1. The BigHorn Jeep Club has been given full authority to close the trail as needed for scheduled work trips. This means ONLY registered volunteers and vehicles will be allowed beyond either entrance. Using USFS provided radios, club members can coordinate work activities so that the highly valued volunteer time can be utilized as efficiently as possible. Thank-you, US Forest Service.
On July 22-23 and August 11-12-13, the Holy Cross Trail will be CLOSED for repairs.
#2. TS3... (Just passed the French Creek Crossing) will be built into a stable "go-a-round". Completing this to USFS recommendations will require moving approximately 20 cubic yards of rock into the lower area. Rocks are not readily available near TS3 due to the work done at the Big Bog in 1989.
Trucks and "rock trailers" for moving many tons of rock will be needed. Repairs in just this area, need the help of 8-10 people (per day) and 2 truck/trailer vehicles and 2 winch equipped rigs for dragging rocks. BHJC will be providing one trailer. Temporary "ramps" will be installed at obstacles, for safe passage of rock hauling trucks and trailers.
#3. Rebuilding the fence at the old Big Bog. Trees marked by USFS Rangers will be cut down for this purpose. A crew of 5-7 people (per day) equipped with chain saws and sledge hammers will be needed. The new fence will be a low profile "Z" style.
#4. TS2 will need some fence constructed and more boulder size rocks moved. A crew of 4-6 people (per day) and at least one rock moving (winch equipped) rig will be needed.
#5. Approximately 10-12 more winch anchor points will be installed, many of which will be past Holy Cross City. A crew of 3-4 and rigs and drivers willing and capable of driving the "extreme" section of the trail will be required.
#6. Many smaller parking/turn-out areas need repair. Smaller crews of 2-3 volunteers each will be required for this work.
#7. Trail security volunteers (2 people per day) are needed to monitor the trail heads, turn away non-work related people/vehicles, and help with "check-in" of registered volunteers. The security crews will have USFS radios for communication.
Can we count on YOU to volunteer? Please let us know ASAP John Recob, (303) 221-1313 or Josh Lowenstein (303) 393-8097.
The camping area for work party volunteers will be at mile 3.1 of the Gold Park Road. A Porta-potties will be on site at the camping area. The first weekend work part scheduled for July 22-23 will meet at the camping area on Friday, July 21. The second weekend work party, August 11-13, will meet at the same camp site on Thursday, August 10. Late arrivals will meet at the parking lot of the "cut off road" between 8:30 and 9 am on all work trip dates (July 22 and August 11). Vehicles to the trail work sites should be equipped with winches.
Drawings for raffle prizes from 4x4 related companies and shops, will be held every evening after day's is complete. Most prizes will be in form of gift certificates. All registered volunteers who have put in a day of work are eligible for the drawings and you need not be present to win.
Dinner will be provided for volunteers, dates and specifics for these are not set yet.
