Pirates of the Rubicon to Host 4th Annual Rubicon Cleanup

October 21, 2000
El Dorado County, California

The world famous Rubicon Trail is known all over the world for being one of the most difficult four wheel drive trails. Back in the 1920’s, the Rubicon Trail was a smooth cobblestone road leading to the famous Rubicon Springs Hotel. People traveled by automobile and horseback to the hotel to enjoy the luxurious amenities and mineral springs in the area. In the 1940’s the hotel was abandoned, and the road fell into despair. Over the past 50 years, the Rubicon Trail has become a world-class 4x4 trail, testing both man and machine to their limits.

The Pirates of the Rubicon Four Wheel Drive Club, based out of Placerville, California, are doing their part to keep the trail open for another 50 years. In cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, they are hosting the 4th Annual Rubicon Cleanup project. Volunteers will be picking up trash and debris along the trail, and doing trail maintenance to stop erosion and block off unauthorized bypasses. There will be prizes and gifts for active participants in the cleanup.
