The Rusty Nail is the short cut up to the Golden crack on the Golden Spike trail. The savings in time is not without it's price however. The Rusty nail is a technical trail with some difficult climbs and some off camber driving near cliff edges.
JeepWire.Com and the Jeepoffroad mailing list hosted an unofficial run up the Rusty Nail at the 2000 EJS. Staff members and Jeepwire readers were both invited to the event, with a good mix of Jeep vehicles including flat fenders, CJs, XJs and even a Grand Wagoneer.
As I mentioned above, the Rusty Nail comes out onto the Golden Spike trail near the Golden Crack, on the same side as the Golden Stairs and Double Whammy. We skipped the Golden Crack this year due to a massive traffic jam, but continued out to run the rest of the obstacles.
