Leaving the cold and Olympic infested Salt Lake behind, we headed south to St. George, Utah for the warm sun and the United Rock Crawling and Off-Road Challenge (UROC). We arrived on Thursday in the midst of the check in and tech inspections. It was a nice change from the winter conditions we'd left behind. Seems like there was a lot of cabin fever going around and the warm sun and hot competition drew almost 60 rigs for the two-day event. The new area that Craig Stumph, President of UROC, obtained permits for can only be described with one word: AWESOME! I know that word gets over used sometimes, but in this case it is more than accurate. This area has been an extreme playground for a few locals and they are the ones that clued Craig in on the site. In fact a couple of the local boys, Mike Cook and Dave Burling were two of the Course Marshals for this event. Other Marshals included Craig Stumph, and Lehi Smith. These guys did an outstanding job of keeping the event and crowds in check.
Craig will not like me telling you this but he rolled his rig earlier in the week setting the courses. Yes that's right, Craig actually drives the courses he sets up before the competition. Just about every rig rolled or tipped during the two-day event. There was some doubt from Craig Friday morning, just after the event got underway, after watching a number of the Unlimited class rigs scale the wall on Course #1, Craig speculated he had set the courses too easy. The rocks and gravity were to prove otherwise!
New to UROC this year is a class division. Unlimited class lets just about any modification with tire size a minimum of 37 inches. Although rear steering is thought to give an edge, so points are deducted if used. New is the Legend class. Tires no larger than 36 inches and original frames. A complete listing of the rules can be found on the UROC website.

| Curtis Olsen of High Country Helicopter, LLC provided the ride for this aerial photo of the event site. The courses were tough and many competitors used tow straps to balance their rigs | |||
Curtis Olsen of High Country Helicopter, LLC was kind enough to take us for a birds eye view of the event. What fun that was! On Saturday the spectator crowd was estimated at well over 4,000. All I can say is if you did not get a chance to be out in the 70-degree weather watching crazy folks destroy their equipment you really missed out.
