TDS PROVIDES RED CROSS ASSISTANCE DURING 2007 WILDFIRES

San Diego, CA (Nov 5, 2007): The Tierra del Sol Four Wheel Drive Club of San Diego (TDS4x4) provided assistance during the October 2007 wildfires that swept through San Diego County. As the first responders began to control the wildfires, TDS members joined with the local Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and American Red Cross to assess the damage caused by the wildfires.

Familiar with San Diego County and equipped with four-wheel drive vehicles and amateur radio communications, Tierra del Sol members provided critical transportation and communications services as part of the Red Cross Damage Assessment effort. The Red Cross DA follows behind the fire fighting effort to evaluate the extent of damage and help the Red Cross determine the services necessary to assist residents forced to evacuate their homes.

The Red Cross provides emergency food and shelter during disasters. The Damage Assessment Teams provide the critical data needed to staff the emergency shelters to assist displaced residents.

The Tierra del Sol Four Wheel Drive Club has been providing assistance to the San Diego Red Cross chapter for over twelve years beginning with the 1996 Harmony Grove Fire. The 2007 wildfires marks the fourth time club members have volunteered to assist during a wildfire crisis.
